Cost of Lawn Seeding
By ProMatcher Staff
The cost of lawn seeding (see the chart to the right) will increase or decrease based upon a number of factors. We have prepared a list of items that impact the cost of seeding:
Are you planting a new lawn or are you overseeding? Planting seeds for a new lawn will cost you more than overseeding an existing lawn. Seeding a new lawn requires more seed (roughly twice as much) and more preparation than overseeding.
What type of seed are you using? The type of seed you use will impact the cost of the service. Your geographic location will impact the type of seed you can use. There are 12 zones in the United States and multiple types of grass you can use. Each grass will have a different cost associated with it.
The size of the area you are planting. The more area to be seeded, the higher the cost. However, many services will provide a discount for larger projects and some companies will have a minimum cost to provide the service.
Is it a residential or commercial project. Truth be told, there really should not be much difference between seeding a commercial property and seeding a residential property. Do not allow that to factor into your cost.
Do you have the right soil pH? Most grasses like neutral soils (the pH balance of the soil). You can purchase a home testing kit to find out if you have the right soil. If you plant grass seed in soil that is too acidic or too alkaline, it may not grow. If you do not have a neutral soil, you will need to invest some time and money into preparing your soil.
Pre-planting preparation: weeding, grading, soil delivery. The cost of lawn seeding can increase if additional materials and preparation time is required. Does the lawn need to be weeded? Does it need to be graded? Do you need to deliver and spread new soil?
